A Senate Committee comprising leading Canadian politicians has recommended that Canada should legalize marijuana altogether and wipe clean the criminal records of all 600,000 Canadians busted for possession.

"Whether or not an individual uses marijuana should be a personal choice that is not subject to criminal penalties," Senator Pierre Nolin, the chairperson of the committee said at a press conference this week.

"We have come to the conclusion that, as a drug, it should be regulated by the State much as we do for wine and beer, hence our preference for legalization over decriminalization."

The Senate also declared that Canada should start seeking amendments to United Nations conventions and treaties governing illegal drugs, a move likely to infuriate their prohibitionist neighbours in America.
