Big Bad Boogaloo: New York Latino Fusion from the 60s

Author: Jonty Adderley
Monday, August 26, 2002
According to the extensive sleevenotes, Boogaloo music is the fusion between Latin rhythms and black soul that was recorded almost exclusively by young, rebellious Puerto Ricans and Cubans in New York in the late 60s and this album focuses entirely on that period.

Sung predominantly in English, the tracks chart the city's alternative street culture of the era when protest and political awareness briefly lit up America's consciousness, musically keeping the rhythms and tempos hot, hard and funky. Joe Bataan and Ray Baretto are two of the better known names whilst the likes of Tito Puente and several of his sideman also make distinguished appearances on several tracks.

Big Bag Boogaloo: Latin Boogaloo from the Big Apple, is out on Harmless Records early September.
