Clubbers caught drinking and dancing in Ayia Napa's streets this season risk jail, according to a report in this week's Guardian, which revealed that Cypriot authorities will be boosting undercover policemen by a factor of six.

"If these people continue to not respect themselves or this place we'll close the discos," warned Ayia Napa Mayor Ms Barbara Pericleous.

"We'll close the pubs, refuse to give clubbers apartments to stay in and stop them playing garage music."

According to The Times, the resort hopes to retain clubs aimed at "more mature clubbers", and the paper suggests that the "new Ayia Napa" is Faliraki on Rhodes. Ominously, the Greek destination has featured heavily in British media reports in recent weeks, following a series of vicious rapes of British women.

Two more women were raped this week, according to the Standard, one a 20 year old from Scotland, who was "too drunk to resist" when a taxi driver attacked her.
