Joey Negro Presents Jakatta : American Booty
(Ministry Of Sound)

"Out of all the records I've ever made, this one's sparked up the most interest." So said Joey Negro in the latest issue of 7 magazine about his latest track American Booty, based on an Eno-esque sample from the movie American Beauty. Signed to Ministry after what reports suggested was the biggest record company bidding war since Spiller's Groovejet, the track sounds strangely retrogressive, being reminiscent of the ambient tinged progressive house tunes of the early 90s.

Melodic, catchy and remarkably repetitive (even more than usual!) the track looks certain for (UK) chart success, particularly given its Radio 1 playlisting. Deciding what to call himself, though was a last minute decision, Negro told 7, after be abandoned his original working title of Jakarta because, "there was a really nasty dictatorship in power there".

While Timo's mix cleans it up (what the "-"-), X-Press 2 deliver the best version, camping up Cook's dancefloor magic with their own stomping (and slower) signature groove. Less impressive are the two breakbeat style mixes from DJ Godfather, not least because of the quality of the aforementioned mixes. What the fuck.

Kraftwerk: Expo 2000 Remixes, Orbital, Francois K, UR
(EMI)

30 years after they released their debut album Tone Float (recorded inside a Dusseldorf oil refinery) Kraftwerk are rightly acknowledged as key pioneers of electronic dance music. Likewise, all three remixers of this new highly impressive selection are leaders in their own respective (sub) fields, all of which owe a debt to the German experimentalists.

Orbital add their instantly recognisable signature style of stabbing synth chords and rave friendly ambiences, while UR provide no less than 4 different mixes, covering funky techno workouts to Rolando's latest gem, a string-laden trancer with all the right Jaguar elements.

The standout mix of an impressive selection is Francois Kervokian and Rob Rives' mix. Racking down the tempo significantly, Kervorkian reinvents the track as a slow- build deep house groover that ebbs and flows without losing for a second its sophisticated NY vibe. Check the site for soundclips.

X-Press 2: Muzikizum
(Skint Records)

Simple, direct and even predictable, Muzikizum is nevertheless a guaranteed house floor filler of superior quality, highlighting the experience, knowledge and abilities of Rocky, Diesel and Ashley Beedle, three of the biggest names in UK house, since the very beginning.

The track starts with a thumping bass, building its energy and intensity through synth stabs, hi hats and cut up vocals, melting into breakdowns before picking up the pace again. Instantly recognisable to anyone who knows their recent smash AC/DC (or any of X Press 2's early 90s anthems such as London X-Press, Muzik Express or Rock 2 House) Muzikizum will dominate dance floors for months to come. Quality British house at its best.

Fatboy Slim: Star 69
(Skint Records/Sony)

The Man-with-the-Midas-touch Norman Cook has recruited fellow Midas enhanced producers Timo Maas and X- Press 2, to create yet another killer club anthem that's already been dominating dancefloors from KL to Sao Paulo to London for the last 2 months. The track, with its relentless line of "They know what is what, but they don't what is what, they just strut - what the fuck', is catchy, thumping and instantly recognisable and has been crossing DJ boundaries with impressive ease.
