The internet is to blame for the rapid decline of Britain's last rock weekly NME, IPC head honcho Steve Sutherland claimed this week, as the paper's circulation slipped by a further 8% to 70,003. "You don't have to read a hundred words on 'sonic cathedrals', take someone's word for it and buy the album only to find out it's a pile of shit," Sutherland said. "You can read about it, get excited, go to a website, hear it, buy it and have it delivered to your door next day. It's the fulfilment of the music fan's dream."

Countering his argument was the continued success of dance print titles Ministry and Mix Mag which put on highly impressive circulation increases of 8.1% and 47% respectively (Ministry; rising to 90,235 , Mix Mag to 106,111). NME's sister title Muzik remained becalmed, however, selling just 142 extra copies per month during the same period (representing a 0.3% increase to 43,748).
