80's popstars turned superstar DJs Boy George and Jeremy Healy made friends in the 80s because they'd both grown up being called 'poofta' and 'bum bandit', Boy George told the Observer last week in a feature about the current 80s fashion revival. "We were all part of an extended family of freaks where the only crime was getting a look wrong or stealing someone else's," George recalled. "We fiercely protected our images and I remember myself and fellow freak Jeremy Healy waiting outside a club, scissors in hand, to cut off some wannabe's hair because it was identical to his."

Despite the fact that both DJs are now multimillionaires, George indicated that 'freakdom' remained their defining characteristic. "A true freak knows that all clothes are just surface," he said. "It's what you think and what you do that really matters and true style revolutions come from the gutter, not off the peg at Gucci or Prada."
