Innovator 2nd Birthday Today

Author: Gasp Entertainment
Wednesday, April 4, 2001
Hello everyone,

The crew at Gasp would like to take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of people who have been emailing us over the last few months with requests for information on Melbourne's favorite events.

For those of you who are unsure, we are currently in the process of developing the next series of Innovator parties which are set to return later in the year, bigger and better than ever before.

I would also like to thank you all for your kind support over the last two years. Without your passion and love of the music we would not have got this far.

As our gift I would like to give you the opportunity to remember the night that started it all.

Sunday 4th April 1999. Innovator - Featuring Derrick May - Transmat Records Detroit.

We have for your enjoyment recovered the files from the Original Web cast and Gasp Entertainment has the pleasure of inviting you all to celebrate our 2nd Birthday Online.

Happy Birthday Innovator

Derrick May - Transmat Records Detroit.

Here is the man and the music that created, quite literally, a generation.

A generation of minds that suddenly heard new ways of thinking. A collective consciousness turned onto radical concepts of living and of being. A true musical (r)evolution. A musical descendant of George Clinton, Manuel Gottshing, Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder. Derrick May took the hard math of the Europeans and merged it with the future funk of Black America to create the timeless classics: Strings of Like, It Is What It Is, Drama, The Beginning. May crafter symphonies for the 23rd Century, a virtual soundtrack for some Intergalactic Carnival.

The dance floor of his mind crossed every boundary - race, class, intellectual, sexual - the ideas that emanated from his early compositions did more than just change how a generation of heads listened to music, it changed the way they lived.

It has been said that without Strings of Like, the 1988 uprising of British youth known as "The Summer of Love" may never have happened. And while his now decade old concepts continue to inspire countless imitators the world over, no one has yet to craft such an indelible blueprint.

Single-handedly creating the prototype of "Superstar DJ" long before such a term even existed, it was (and is) May that works as Detroit's global ambassador, enrapturing audiences worldwide with his legendary DJ sets.

His is the sound that galvanized a worldwide generation of minds, minds that listened and learned the secret of Techno: How to create your own future.
