Clubbers visiting the Balearics this year will have to pay a new 'green tax' that will be automatically added to their accommodation bills, local authorities announced this week. Aiming to raise £40million (US$60m) towards an ecological fighting fund, the new tax also appears to reflect a desire on the islanders' part to actively move upmarket. Announcing the new charges, which will add up to £9 a week on hotel bills, regional government tourism minister Celesti Alomar told the Observer that they were 'tiring' of 'cheap, destructive' tourism. "We have to compete now with quality and that means protecting and restoring the environment and countryside," he said.

In Ibiza club news, Jazz FM's excellent Hed Kandi sub division (a radio show and record label) are to host weekly events at Pacha, rotating three themes, 'Happy House', 'Back to Love' and 'Chill Out' throughout the season. According to the Independent, the jazz station decided to embrace dance music in July 1999 "when a member of staff suggested there was space in the market for dance music CDs aimed at older clubbers who no longer party every weekend but still want to hear dance music." Pacha will presumably be installing chairs.

Es Paradis is one of the earliest clubs to open each season and this year launch on Friday 11th May. Marco Giovanni hosts the club's first water party of the season the next day (Saturday 12th) followed by Dominic Spreadlove on Sunday. Graham Gold, Slipmatt, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Anne Savage and Marc Et Claude also appear during May at the San Antonio clubbing institution.
