'Fag-baiting, women-hating' gangsta rappers dress like rent boys and 'have much in common with drag queens", leading Rolling Stone writer Toure claimed last week, in a controversial new book" 'The Greatest Taboo: Homosexuality in Black Communities" "As in so many homosexual political fantasies, homophobia is a mask for gayness," he claimed.

The controversial book is a compilation of essays by mainly American writers that examines the frequency of same- sex exploitation and relationships during the slave trade. Hip hop's predominant image of low-slung, baggy trousers was also inspired by homosexual traditions, said the editor of the book, Delroy Constantine-Simms, in an interview with black newspaper the Voice.
"It goes back to dress codes in prisons where black inmates became gay 'husbands' or 'wives', he said. "It's a throwback to black male prostitutes of the 40s who wore them to assist easy access for their clients" (The Guardian).

The book emerged several weeks after New York's Number 1 rapper Puff Daddy exhibited 'rhino-printed goat suede peacocks, coyote tail scarves, curly lamb vests and thermal Sean John crews' on a New York catwalk. Explaining his interest in the world of high fashion, Combs announced on the catwalk; 'I like looking in the mirror and I want my pants to drape perfectly over my combat boots." "Men's fashion was boring," he said some weeks before the show. "I just felt it was unfair for us not to have fun like women get to have. We're gradually taking men into the zone of being able to feel beautiful, but still be able to be a strong man about it."
