Harvey R. Ball, the commercial artist who invented the acid house smiley face in1963, has died age 79. Mr Ball reportedly came up with the image when working on an in-house friendship advertising campaign for an Ohio Insurance company called State Mutual Life Assurance. When the company's marketing director suggested a smile, Mr. Ball added eyes, "so that ill-tempered employees couldn't turn it into a frown."(Boston Globe)
