Carl Craig is to sue organisers of this weekend's Detroit Electronic Music Festival for defamation of character and breach of contract after the event's producers Pop Culture Media terminated his contract unexpectedly. Craig was the event's Creative Director responsible for booking the DJs and last year managed to attract over 1 million people to the three day event. This year's event is likely to be unaffected though his firing could seriously affect next year's lineup "Everyone in the community is upset and angry about this, but we have to think about what's best for the music," said Derrick May. "We are going to go out there and do our shows and be professional. That's what Carl would want."

"I have chosen to be low key about the pressures that I have endured over the last three months," Craig said later explaining his reasons for taking legal action. "I was not made aware of any city imposed deadline's in my employment contract or in writing .. A positive image and strong artist lineup for the DEMF have always been my main concerns. This is my dream to have my friends and family of the music community perform at Hart Plaza. This festival is good for everyone and I hope that it will continue to be a success."
