Hard house pioneer producer Baby Doc was seized by Russian cops last week and forced to bribe them to escape arrest, he told Mezz this week. "I got stopped for smoking a cigarette outside Lenin's tomb in Red Square," the Doc admitted. "A tobacco cigarette!" "Luckily I had an interpreter with me but they literally stood there, all 'gunned up' (carrying guns) wearing those fur hats and great coats, shouting 'ten dollars'. Even though they were all smoking themselves. I gave them ten dollars and walked away."

Baby Doc had been in Moscow to perform at a Miller Lite party alongside superstar German jock DJ Hooligan (aka Da Hool). The American beer company appears to have struggled to win converts according to Baby Doc. "We had a lovely time in Moscow, they're lovely people who don't do any drugs they just drink vodka," he said. "The crowd were mad but we had to do a different set because they were drinking so much alcohol. I had to cut my set down because they basically couldn't take it for more than an hour. I couldn't do any long mixes."

The Doc's experiences backed up a recent report in new British lifestyle magazine Mondo that claimed that bribery is a necessary method for communicating with Russian police. "Cops generally have no problem with either drunkenness or prostitution, but drugs offences will cost you at least a US$100 back-hander (bribe)", they advised. "Westerners are expected to pay more than locals."

Performing alongside him at the Miller gig was his long time production partner (and girlfriend) S-J, who also features on many of the tracks on their new retrospective compilation album Baby Doc & S-J: 'The Originals' (out on Arriba, mid June).
