16 Bit Lolitas - Little Bit Of House

3D’s Nina Bertok speaks to Dutch house duo 16 Bit Lolitas, fresh from spinning for Brazil and playing We Love Sounds.

For Amsterdam housemasters 16 Bit Lolitas, merely having a career in music is a victory in itself, as one half of the duo Peter Kriek claims. And while they dream of cooking up a Top 100 hit sometime before the end of this year, Kriek and partner in dance Ariaan Olieroock have already made a very big impression on the Brazilian scene at least – so much so that they’ve been asked to provide a soundtrack to the country’s hottest club, Warung Beach.

“It’s been a huge honour to do this compilation,” Kriek chuffs. “We did it a few months ago and it’s basically us at our most proggy-based sound which we’ve been working on for a few years. We’re bringing that to Australia as well. When we were approached to launch the Warung, Brazil CD, we were very excited mostly because it’s one of our favourite clubs to play anyway. I think it’s a pretty good representation of what the club is like.”

It isn’t only the Warung, Brazil mix that sees 16 Bit Lolitas really showcase their original production skills – as Kriek points out, most of the time the duo write new material exclusively for their live sets.

“To tell you the truth, filling a DJ set every week is a real job,” he admits. “I also think the harder you work the better the music is, especially when we’re living in a time in which so many people are making records that it’s like finding a needle in a haystack when it comes to really good tracks. I guess one way of ensuring quality music is to have complete control over what you do, and through our own label is how we do that.”

After producing crowd favourites like The Puppet Show and Destiny, it made perfect sense to ensure all of Kriek and Olieroock’s tracks to follow would be completely in the duo’s control, and lo! their record label Bits And Pieces was born.

“It’s very simple,” offers Kriek. “Without some sort of business sense, it’s really hard to be an artist these days. Of course, the business side of things can be a distraction to your creative process because, let’s face it, the two things are completely opposite. But it’s a reality that you can’t neglect as an artist – you have to either take care of your own business or get a really great team behind you.”

It has been the smarts and the talent combined in 16 Bit Lolitas’ case that’s seen one of the duo’s dreams come true in respect to Warung, Brazil – and now it’s time to tick off yet another goal for 2009.

“We are trying to enter the Top 100,” Kriek reveals. “To be able to do that at least once would be a really nice achievement. We feel what we’ve been doing is cool, but we want to move forward and create a new sound. We’re trying to look back more on the electronic festival acts of the past, like The Chemical Brothers and Underworld, so recreating that energy is our mission right now.”
