Sebastian Ingrosso - All In The Family

Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso – half of the famed Swedish house mafia – are returning once more to the land Down Under, to play the Future Music Festival. 3D’s Rezo chats with Ingrosso.

There is a bit of cross-pollination going on in Stockholm. Sebastian Ingrosso made his first foray into the studio some time around the mid-1990s. After a few years of experience he penned Freshly Squeezed and Echo Vibes around 2001 with buddy Steve Angello on the Joia record label – and the two have worked on all manner of projects since.

This isn’t to detract from Sebastian’s personal success; he’s an accomplished DJ, producer and remixer, he is the label boss at Refune Records, and he is a part of an even bigger sensation, the Swedish House Mafia.

“Steve [Angello] and I have known each other since we were about six,” Ingrosso says. “We’re like brothers and we hooked up with Eric Prydz and Axwell and we worked our arses off at collaborating and working together. We pushed each other really hard and we’re like family now, so that’s why we called it a mafia family.”

Production-wise, there have been some really good releases during the Swedish summer, so much so that it isn’t foreign for Ingrosso to walk into a club and hear a remix of his played half a dozen times in the one night. “I’ve done the Cream compilation too towards the end of 2008 and I just want to keep continuing to bring out good quality music,” he says. There are a fair few other things happening in the background to follow up from the It’s True EP, was also released in 2008. “I do it for the fans you know – it is a great market for dance music right now and things are going really well. We are just working hard to bring out the best stuff we can.”

Ingrosso isn’t shy of stating his opinion. He is on the record last year for publicly degrading minimal. “The whole Berlin minimal thing for me isn’t that inspiring – techno is cool and fine but this just wasn’t my cup of tea,” he reaffirms. “There weren’t any big club hits where people could go absolutely mental. Now Eric Prydz is making good music and Axwell is making good music and in general good music is coming again. And it’s really not difficult. We just think positive when we were in the studio eating once a day and feeling like shit and it will all come back to us. We feel really lucky to be doing so well and we love every second of it, as long as we don’t forget were you come from it won’t ever be a problem.”

Behind all the aliases – Buy Now, Fireflies, General Modes, Outfunk, Mode Hookers and more – Ingrosso is coming of age. Not only has he surrounded himself with the crème de la crème of Swedish house music; he is also aligned with the biggest and finest proponents of the electronic music scene generally. While the last 10 years have been mighty kind to Stockholm’s finest, don’t be surprised if the next 10 are the ones where his career really blooms.
